Cloth Diapering, Parenting, & Randomness From an Eclectic Individual

Smarter than a Snappi?

So, I haven’t quite figured out snappis yet…

I’ve watched many a you tube video, and know how they work in theory, but when I practice on my stuffed stand in, it just doesn’t seem to grip enough.  It certainly isn’t to my liking, or to where I would let a baby be held while wearing it.

I’ve pretty much resigned myself to just trifolding the prefolds into the covers…

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you!!!

Weekend dinner blues? Try this South Asian treat!

CHICKEN SAAG RECIPE

This is a popular Pakistani/Indian chicken and spinach dish, which you can substitute aloo (potato) for the chicken if you’re in a veggie mood!!!  I adapted this recipe from page 446 of “Chicken, over 400 fabulous recipes for all occasions” and my own experience in cooking this type of food.

Ingredients

1 lb chicken breast, cut to 2-inch pieces OR 1-2 large russet potatoes, cut into large cubes

1 lb (16 oz) packet of frozen, chopped spinach

1-2 plum tomatoes, small chopped, or halved and thinly sliced

1 medium onion, halved and thinly sliced

3 tbsp of unsweetened butter

2 tbsp ginger garlic paste (or you can make it fresh yourself)

1 tbsp cumin powder

1 tbsp coriander powder

1 tbsp salt

1/2 tbsp black pepper

1/2 tbsp red pepper

1/4 tbsp tumeric

1/2 cup whipped plain yogurt

Directions

Be sure the chicken (if using) and spinach is/are thawed.  Melt 1.5 tbsp butter in a pan, then sautee onion until slightly brown.  Add tomato and cook until soft.  Add ginger garlic.  Add spinach and spices (you can adjust the red pepper according to your personal preference), cooking for 5-10 minutes.  CAREFULLY blend the contents of the pan in a blender until pureed (this is for a nice, smooth texture).  Return to pan, then add yogurt one spoon at a time, stirring in between each.  Next add chicken or potato according to your preference.  Cook until chicken or potato is done to your liking.  The final step is to add the last 1.5 tbsp of butter, stirring it in (this is optional, but adds a good flavor to the dish).  For a healthier option, you can simply sautee the onions in olive oil and skip the butter altogether (but really, who wants to do that?!!!).  Serve with hot naan, paratha, or even whatever tortilla you have available, and enjoy!!!

Using Swagbucks to get free diaper stuff!!!

So I happened upon Swagbucks the other day, while surfing for Planet Wise wet bag reviews…

This Mom had posted (sorry, I don’t remember her site right now) about how she used Swagbucks to buy a few little diaper extras each month, including wet bags, detergent, and prefolds!!!

Like the good “it’s got to good to be true” skeptic that I am, I naturally googled for reviews on the Swagbucks site, and surprisingly they seemed pretty legit.  You have to put in more time to get more rewards it seemed, but that sounded normal for such a surfing/survey site.  I signed up easily yesterday morning, and by this evening I had enough points for a $5 Amazon gift card!!!  The eCard will show up in my Swagbucks account in 10-ish days!!!  Sounds pretty great to me!

You can do this repeatedly (up to 5 times per card type I’ve heard) throughout the month, and easily end up with $25 to spend on diapering stuff!!!

The catch – you do need to put in some time each day, how much depends on you.  You also have to qualify for surveys (if you choose to do those) and some may take up some of your time before they kick you out and say that you’re “disqualified.”  Beyond that, I haven’t run into any problems as of yet.  Granted, it’s only been two days, but I can see many Amazon $5 eCards in my future!!!

Also, one more word of caution, if you misuse the site, they are prone to canceling accounts.  Just make sure you don’t have a robot do your surveys or internet searches or surveys for you, and just be truthful and honest when answering questions or when web surfing.

If you want to sign up for Swagbucks, you can do it by clicking this link: http://www.swagbucks.com/refer/Tahira49 , and I’ll get matching bucks for referring you!!!  Thank you!!!

Please feel free to post comments of your experiences below, or ask questions!!!

Hello Blog World!

I am just starting out as a blogger (sp?) but have looked to many, many blogs for advice, reviews, and information.

I hope to be successful, but in what I don’t yet know, and that is indeed the story of my life!!!  My main focus is on child rearing; more specifically cloth diapering and accessories, parenting styles and discipline, clothing, nutrition, baby care and entertainment products, and lots & lots of advice from the blog-o-sphere!

Topics that may also be included (but are still parent relavant) will be referred to as the 7 Random R’s: religion, real estate, radiography/health care, retail, retreats, redecorating, and recipes!  I am by no means an expert in any of these (yet!) but am in some way involved in/interested in each.

I intend to make this an open space, free for commenting but harsh on insults of any kind!  Wish me luck and thanks for stopping by!

Helpful Definitions for this Blog

This post will be periodically updated to include words/phrases/ideas that will be commonly included in my blogs.  Please feel free to ask if you need any further clarification on anything :).

DIAPERING/PARENTING TERMS

AIO/AI2/OS: all in one, all in two, and one size respectively.  AIO diapers will have a sewn in soaker and usually don’t have a pocket (like the Bumgenius newborn diaper).  AI2 diapers are “hybrids” that can use removable inserts and/or disposable inserts (like the Grovia shell systems).  OS diapers are supposed to fit babies starting at 8-10 pounds, all the way through potty training (like the Fuzzibunz Elite version).

TTC: trying to conceive

DD/DS/DH: these terms are used in cloth diapering blogs and mean “Dear Daughter,” “Dear Son,” and “Dear Husband,” respectively.

PF&C: prefolds and covers (prefolds are the “old school” type diaper made of a thicker layer of cotton in the middle, and are not waterproof so they require a waterproof cover)

RELIGIOUSLY AFFILIATED TERMS

ISA: An abbreviation for “Insha’Allah” which is translated as “God willing” or if Allah Wills (I think I’ll use this quite often)

God/Allah: I will likely use God and Allah interchangeably.  I would like you all to know that Muslims believe in the same omnipotent God, the God of Abraham (Ibraheem in Arabic), but we believe that Jesus was a prophet and do not associate him with God.

Current Diaper Stash as of 2/16/12

We are still TTC, but I have almost completed my cloth diaper stash.  I want it to last through at least two children, possibly 3, and I wanted a good variety without getting too complicated.  As first time parents, I wanted to keep washing and wearing the diapers simple, I wanted to stay away from the dreaded microfiber stink issues as much as possible, and I have a personal preference for the look and fit of a fitted diaper over a bulky all in one (AIO).  I have a variety of gently used and new diapers.  Here goes:

12 Gently Used Bummis Newborn Organic cotton prefolds

9 Gently Used Kissaluvs Size 0 fitteds

2 Gently Used Bummis Newborn Super Brite covers

2 New Bummis Newborn Super Lite covers

36 New Bleached Infant size prefolds

1 New Bummis Small Super Lite cover

5 Gently Used Osocozy Size 1 AIO (all in one)

2 New Itti Bitti Boo Small fitteds

23 Gently Used Premium prefolds

6 New Medium Swaddlebees Simplex 2.0

8 Gently Used Itti Bitti Tuttos

2 New Kawaii Goodnight Heavywetter OS (one size) pockets

1 Gently Used Bummis Tots Bots Easy Fit OS

1 Grovia OS AI2 shell

4 New Grovia Wonder Wraps OS covers

10 Gently Used 6 layer cotton doublers

12 Planet Wise cloth wipes

ISA, it will not be overkill or too little for the number of kids we hope to have.

My goal is to spend about $1000 for EVERYTHING, EVER and that should get us through 2-3 kids.  I think that there is a misconception that if you buy 24 pocket diapers and use them birth to potty on one child, that they will be able to last you through your second child.  With using a mixture of sized and one size diapers, they will be in a bigger rotation, will wear less, and will last longer.

I have spent about $800 so far, have re-sold about $160 worth on Ebay, so that puts me at $640! 🙂 ?

My still to buy list includes: more sized covers, an airplane print Grovia shell, 8 more Swaddlebees (4 medium, 4 large), 2 more Tuttos, 4 more Boos (2 medium, 2 large), Country Save detergent, wet bags, more wipes, perhaps some wool dryer balls, and a partridge in a pear tree!!! 🙂

I will likely post a picture when my stash is “complete” (is a stash ever really complete?).

I already have enough drying racks, I plan on putting the soiled diapers in the wet bags (no pail), I don’t plan on having a diaper sprayer but will likely use a squirt bottle of some sort instead.  I don’t plan on having a changing table, but will likely use a changing mat wherever (floor, bed, etc.).  I plan on using just plain ol’ water with the wipes, or perhaps make my own solution in a squirt bottle if needed.  With this amount of diapers, I hope to do laundry every other day.

I don’t plan on doing EC, but I do plan on getting them used to the potty as soon as I think they are ready.  I will hate to see the cloth diapers go, but I want them to be trained as soon as possible.

I think that should be enough on my stash and my diapering philosophies for now.  I have completed roughly a 500 word essay blog, so I’ll let you get back to whatever you should be doing instead of reading my babbling.  Thanks for reading and please do feel free to post any cloth diaper stash advice/comments/warnings below!
